Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is cancer that begins in the breast. While much more common in those assigned female at birth, those assigned male at birth can also get breast cancer.

Breast cancer is highly curable if found early. Unfortunately, many breast cancers are diagnosed once it has already spread. Early Detection = Better Outcomes®, so it’s important to get screened, reduce your risk, and talk with your health care provider about your health history.

Symptoms:

Although most breast changes are not cancer, it is important to check with your doctor if you notice unusual changes, including :

  • Lump in the breast
  • Change in size or shape of the breast
  • Nipple discharge

Causes

Breast cancer is caused by certain changes in how breast cells function, especially how they grow and divide into new cells. A risk factor is anything that increases the chance of getting a disease. Some risk factors for breast cancer, like drinking alcohol, can be changed. However, risk factors also include things people cannot change, like your genetics, getting older, and your family history.

  • Hormonal changes
  • Family history (genetic factors)
  • Unhealthy lifestyle (poor diet, lack of exercise)
  • Increasing age
  • Alcohol consumption
