Oral Cancer

Oral cancer is cancer of the mouth. Tobacco and alcohol use are among the strongest risk factors for oral cancer.

Oropharyngeal cancer refers to cancer of the back of the throat, including the base of the tongue and tonsils. The human papillomavirus (HPV) causes most oropharyngeal cancers.

Symptoms:

  • Mouth ulcers that do not heal
  • Red or white patches inside the mouth
  • Difficulty in chewing or swallowing
  • Lump or thickening in the mouth or neck
  • Persistent mouth pain or numbness

Causes

  • Tobacco use (smoking, chewing tobacco, gutkha)
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Poor oral hygiene
  • HPV (Human Papillomavirus) infection
  • Prolonged sun exposure (for lip cancer
